How long does propane last for generators?
A friend of mine is toying with the idea of installing a backup power system for his home consisting of a propane generator, a battery array and charge controller. We would run off battery power and run the generator for a couple hours every 3 days or so (or as needed). Were trying to figure out a ballpark estimate for how long we could power the home on the system alone with 1000 gallons of propane. It would be for an average 3 bedroom 2 bath house with a family of four.

We need to know how many Kw the generator is. I can give you a reasonably close estimate of the consumption if I have that.
Propane generators are expensive to operate. For back up purposes thay are great. but don't think you are going to save money by using this generator and getting "off the grid" for a few hours a week. Line power is still going to be cheaper. Especially when you include the capital cost of installing all this.

Edit: Aparantly you don't have a particular size in mind or haven't researched it that far yet. I looked around a bit and a 25Kw generator is probably pretty close to what you need. Don't hold me to that! I'm a propane guy, not a generator guy! But this will give you a rough idea of consumption. A 25Kw generator will use about 5 gallons of propane for every hour it operates. So that ranslates into a 1000 gallon tank (which only holds 800 gallons of propane) lasting you about 50 days if your 3 hours per day is realistic.
