How To Cure The Dog's Upset Stomach?
Dogs are not only voracious eaters, these animals are also indiscriminate eaters so that if they have ingested food and non-food items that do not agree with their system, they would suffer from an upset stomach. Dogs would eat not only spoiled food and rotting things but non-food items as well. In spite of being well fed, dogs would appear to be always hungry thus anything that catch their fancy would be ingested.
The dogs upset stomach can be attributed to a lot of reasons. An upset stomach is commonly blamed on the dog's dietary indiscretion but this gastro intestinal concern common in dogs with sensitive stomach. The reason for the stomach upset of some dogs can be as simple as a change in diet or as serious as a pre existing medical condition that weakens the immune system.
As stomach upset is a common concern, taking the dog to a vet may not be necessary. The dog's stomach upset can be resolved with home remedies and in a day or two the pet will be its usual self. Having been accustomed to dealing with the upset stomach of the pet, the owner would know how to treat the diarrhea and the vomiting of the pet.
A dog with an upset stomach will be less energetic due to the discomfort caused by the pain in the belly. Dogs, as mentioned have huge appetites thus they would not pass up the chance to gobble food. Due to the uncomfortable feeling, a dog with an upset stomach may totally shun food . Dog owners have to carefully observe the dog as when the dog's diarrhea or vomit contains blood, a veterinarian must be consulted at once. These are symptoms of a more serious illness and not just an ordinary stomach upset.
Resting the stomach is the most common home remedy for upset stomach. Food is withheld for 24 hours in older dogs. Younger ones must be given easy to digest food in smaller amounts. Withholding the food is done to give the stomach a chance to rest. Vomiting and diarrhea can result to dehydration thus the pet's water bowl must always be filled. Drinking can worsen the pain being felt by the pet thus it would refuse to drink. The pet must be encouraged to drink water to replenish the fluids lost through diarrhea and vomiting. Encourage the dog to lick ice cubes instead. After the fasting period, the pet can now be given small amount of easy to digest food like boiled chicken and rice.
