How To Save Gas By Hypermiling

In driver's ed class, they teach you how to drive safely, looking out for other cars on the road, following the law and driving defensively. What they don't tell you is that you can save gas and money by a technique known as "hypermiling." Popular Mechanics Magazine's Mike Allen recently wrote an article on how to "squeeze more miles per gallon into every fill-up" by slightly adjusting your driving techniques. The best part about hypermiling is that you can get better gas mileage -- without ripping your car apart or installing expensive mods! According to the author, he went from 30 MPG to 55 MPG over the course of one year by trying some of the following driving tricks.

The first step many hypermilers take is to track their mileage, so they have a clearer understanding of what works best for their vehicles. They can compare how they drive on Monday to how they drive on Tuesday. They can glance down at something called a Scan Gauge to see how many MPG they're using or even how much money a certain trip cost them in gas. The Scan Gauge isn't exactly cheap (with a price tag around $160), but the installation is painless. Experts say that being conscious of how accelerating, braking and driving techniques affect your gas mileage can really make an enormous difference and most drivers save an instant 10% of gas this way.

Hypermiling to save gas isn't necessarily rocket science. Individuals can improve their fuel economy by inflating their tires. According to www.fueleconomy.gov, you can lower your gas mileage by 0.6% for every 1 psi drop in pressure your four tires are under-inflated. Therefore, they estimate you can save about 3.3% just by checking your tires regularly. To find the proper tire pressure, look for a sticker in the driver's side door jamb, a stick inside the glove box or your owner's manual. Don't use the maximum pressure printed on the tire's sidewall. For the best results, experts recommend checking your tire pressure with a tire gauge every time you stop to fill up.

Any hypermiling guru understands that to save gas safely one must be alert on the road. Motorists are accustomed to driving defensively to watch out for speeders, tailgaters and people who will cut them off without signaling. They are not as accustomed to drivers who accelerate slowly, drive under the speed limit or turn off their engines while coasting. The careful hypermiler must make sure he's watching the road and not being wholly distracted by his Scan Gauge. He must, in essence, drive like he's on a bike. While it's not prudent to drive 20 MPG everywhere, it is a good idea to lose a few miles per hour going uphill but save that momentum coming back down again. Cars burn the most fuel when going uphill (sort of like how the most energy is expended riding a bike uphill), so the driver must be patient and apply the gas lightly in these situations to avoid the need to hard-brake later.
