You need both.

Dietary soluble fiber (able to dissolve in water to become gelatinous and is fermented by bacteria in the intestines) and dietary insoluble fiber (to give you bulk and is not fermented).

Usually, the soft parts are soluble fiber (pulp...bananas...) and the hard parts are insoluble fiber (skins, nuts...)

Fiber cannot be digested by humans...what goes in, must go out, whichever transformation they go through doing so.

3 Reasons to Take Fiber Supplements If You Want to Lose Weight

Fiber is a critical supplement to take if you want to lose weight. Along with eating healthy by limiting carbohydrates, increasing lean protein and drinking lots of water while exercising, fiber supplements play an important role.

Let's look at three reasons to take fiber supplements if you want to lose weight.

1. It makes you feel full.

Fiber supplements come either as soluble or insoluble. The insoluble supplements help in digestion because they speed up the passing of food through the digestive system. This makes your stools bulkier. Insoluble fiber is found in foods like brain and grain. On the other hand, soluble fiber supplements absorb water and become like a gel while you are digesting them. This slows the digestive process.

Why is this good? Because it makes you feel full which hopefully will help you eat less. Soluble fiber also lowers cholesterol. As we all know, high cholesterol usually means weight gain.

2. Fiber works with the metabolism.

Fiber works with the metabolism by digesting food quicker. When you speed up your metabolism, particularly through exercise, the fiber in your system kicks in and your digestive system speeds up as well.

3. Fiber causes your body to still burn fat even when you are not exercising.

Your digestive system is constantly trying to break down bacteria and fat. Fiber cannot be used as energy but it still works to improve your digestive system thus causing your body to still burn fat even when you are at rest.

Fiber is a very important nutrient to have in your body, particularly when you are trying to lose weight. The three reasons above validate this. When you are trying to decide which type of fiber to take, you might want to consider how well your digestive system is currently working.

Soluble supplements can sometimes cause constipation while insoluble supplements are not as likely to but still can. They do make your stools bulkier which means it may require more effort to have a bowel movement.

There are many fiber supplements at grocery stores; from Metamucil to tablets. It's advised to go to a health food store or a vitamin store and ask the worker there which type of supplement they would advise for you. Or you can always ask your physician. They usually know more about you anyway.

Regardless, fiber supplements are very important to take when you are trying to lose weight.
