Find Your Family Tree - Know Yourself
"Are you going to find your family tree" was a question I've been asked more often than once. Social History has ever been an interest of mine and it appeared a logical way to explore it, though it was something I mostly meant to do one day in the far off future when I retire. I also knew that when I started it could become an all consuming hobby because that is the way I am. Things altered somewhat in the family and we thought that this was time to make a start whilst we could still access the memories of aged family and relations. There is a family puzzle that many of family had an interest in resolving and the only way to do that was to delve into the family tree. It's an straightforward process to start, there are loads of online resources to help you find your family tree. In my case there is an additional bonus that was totally unexpected "finding myself.
The more people I chatter to about family history, the more I find out this is true. One thing you should be absolutely certain about is that you're going to find puzzles and perhaps even solve one or two of them. You'll find Black Sheep, Saints, Sinners and Heroes scattered round the branches of your family and each one of them will have their own unique charm. You will also find plenty of surprises, in my case a sister and brother that I didn't know I had, which shook my perceptions of my relations to the core and made me re-assess most of what I thought about them and about myself. Viewing yourself as the 'eldest ' is very different to viewing yourself as 'the youngest but one '!
There are things a lot less tangible than those which can sometimes be explained just by genetics, for example I've always been a Needlewoman. I possess a powerful creative drive which demonstrates itself by quilting, embroidery, lacemaking and the like, but I did not know where it came from. My Mom might just about know one end of a needle from the other, but I would not bet on it so I was always at a total loss to find out why thread and fabric were so important to me. Knowing hardly any of my paternal family I was surprised to discover that my family tree on that side was populated by generations of women who were Seamstresses and Tailoresses. It gave me a sense of belonging I had never experienced before, and had never anticipated.
Both these things were very personal to me, and when you find your family tree, doubtless you will find things that may affect you in the same way and it also has a huge impact on how you view the events of history. War is an appalling thing and I've been grateful that it has never touched me but that all changed lately. The killings of the First World War has always caused me unhappiness although it was generally impersonal, simply a moral duty. 2 months ago I became aware that two remote cousins, brothers from a small village in the countryside of Suffolk died in the mud of Flanders, and another cousin died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. - he was only 19. It suddenly became very personal for me, even writing this I have tears in my eyes for the loss their family, my family, suffered. It has suddenly become very personal.
These are just little examples showing how the journey to find your family tree can change you and help you to find things about yourself you never knew. For me it has been a positive experience as it has for the majority of the people I know. Have I discovered the mystery that set us off on this journey - not at the moment , but I'm still working on it!

ATI gsg 5, Sig Sauger 522 or Smith and wesson 15-22?
I've been on a search lately for a really nice ,22 cal tactical rifle for my girl friend. I'm introducing her into the world of rifles. She wants a smaller rifle, carbine like, black and of course I want it to be a really fun rifle that is reliable and etc. I've asked a few questions on here with some great answers so far, but I also came upon the realization that the ATI gsg 5 would be a good option too, so I'm throwing this into the mix now. I'm mainly interested in the S&W 15-22 and the ATI gsg. I like the S&W because I have its big brother, the 5.56 version and I do like the idea of her getting use to an AR, BUT I don't want to her a rifle that is a somewhat replica to something I already own. On the other hand the ATI gsg looks good and etc but I still and not sold on it yet. Let me know your tesimonies or experience if you have had any or know any useful knowledge about these rifles please let me know, I really appreciate it!

I own the Smith and I love it. One of my favorite rifles to shoot. the Sig is a wee bit prettier and more expensive (Lack of sights, but if you have something that goes on a rail it is cheaper), but you get what you pay for.
If you're ready to dish out the extra bux, go for the 522. It comes with no sights like the Smith does.
