FDA Warning about Proton Pump Inhibitors in Heartburn Treatment
Warning Warning!
Popular Heartburn treatment has yet another side effect!
In June of this year the FDA issued a warning to consumers and physicians that high doses or long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (or PPIs), increases the risk for hip, wrist and spine fractures. Proton Pump Inhibitors are a popular heartburn remedy that reduces stomach acid. These drugs work really well but really folks, we need our stomach acid! Lack of stomach acid is called Hypochlorhydria, or lack of hydrochloric acid (HCl). Stomach acid is needed in the absorption of nutrients, especially vitamin B12, the digestion of proteins and elimination of pathogens.
Why does this happen?
The mechanism for bone fractures is that proton pump inhibitors block the absorption of calcium in the body forcing it to get the calcium it needs from your bones. Lower calcium leads to weaker bones resulting in easier breaks and fractures. Not only are bones affected, but calcium is necessary for proper formation of teeth Yikes! If you have Osteoporosis you should take special care to manage your bone density levels and, of course, limit or completly eliminate your use of these drugs. Manufacturers are now required to change labeling on these prescription and over-the-counter products to reflect the risks. The list of drugs effected includes both prescription and over-the-counter brands:
- Nexium
- Dexilant
- Prilosec
- Zegerid
- Prevacid
- Protonix
- Aciphex
- Prilosec OTC
- Zegerid OTC
- Prevacid 24 Hour
FDA advises that you consult your physician before getting off these drugs. Finally the FDA is telling patients not to take OTC PPIs longer than 14 days, and no more than three 14-day treatment courses in one year. They are advising doctors to offer lower dosages and/or shorter durations. Its hard to believe that proton pump inhibitors are the third largest selling drug in the United States, with over 13 million prescriptions annually (the little purple pill, or Nexium, actually has the second highest retail sales of any drug in the US). Big Pharma certainly has a grip on this country! These drugs are being over prescribed and taken for too long! They mask the symptoms rather than resolving the root of the problem.
So what do you do when you stop taking the PPI and the heartburn or reflux symptoms comes back?
