A Dog Owner's Overview Of Dog Skin Problems

Although there are five or more categories of dog skin problems the symptoms of each type overlap the others. Pet owners should watch for hair loss, scaly areas, and swelling. Other common symptoms are redness, rashes, scabs, or drainage. Infected dogs will most often scratch, lick and chew the problem area or rub against furniture and carpeting.

Epidermal bacterial infections are often a secondary symptom of another problem such as an allergy, hormone imbalance or parasites. Signs of a bacterial infection are red or ulcerated skin, yellow pustules, or crusted-over sores. A dog's chin is an area that commonly gets infected but the disease can locate itself anywhere on the body. Antiseptics and antibiotics are common treatments.

Fungal infections, like ringworm, appear as circular patches having crusty centers and is accompanied by hair loss. It is most often found on the dog's head or legs. Fungicidal shampoos and rinses are usually prescribed. The doctor may add other systemic or topical medications. Ringworm is contagious to humans. Luckily, treatment is painless and works well.

An infestation of fleas can cause mange. The fleas primarily attack a dog's ears, front legs, abdomen and chest. Symptoms are hair loss and an intense itch, or there may be minor itching with red, scaly dermis and round areas of hair loss. Another parasite, mites, cause dogs to obsessively scratch their ears. Mites are not easy to detect but often leave discharge or dried blood in the ear. Medicated shampoos, dips, and if necessary antibiotics, solve this problem.

A veterinarian can use a change in diet, immuno-therapy, antihistamines and corticosteroids to treat allergies in canines. Some dog allergens, like flea saliva, cause skin irritation with severe itching. The allergies also come from molds, pollens or house dust. If a dog continually licks a specific area on the body it may be a "hot spot", a patch where the dermis is especially irritated. Although hot spots are often red and moist looking, they may appear normal.

Hormones get out of balance in dogs when the pituitary, adrenal or thyroid glands over or under secrete its hormone. There is rarely itching involved. What is noticeable is thicker, thinner, or an off-color dermis, and hair loss over both sides of the body. Reproductive hormones can also trigger dog skin problems however, neutering is an effective treatment. Otherwise, a vet will address the primary gland illness (like hypothyroidism).

Dogs do not take well to boredom. Lack of physical activity or mental stimulation may trigger dermal irritations. It is suggested all of a dog's grooming products should be specifically recommended for canines. Seasonal change can be a culprit as well. Some dogs are prone to dry or flaky skin during winter months, just as their owners may be.

Fortunately, most dog skin problems readily show themselves and are highly treatable. There are also precautions that can be taken. Effective flea control is the most obvious one. Dogs also need regular brushing to avoid hair matting, may benefit from hypoallergenic shampoos, and appreciate it when their owners vacuum and keep the house clean.
