How to Use Hemorrhoid Suppositories- 4 Important Tips
Suppositories are semi-solid drugs that dissolve into liquid when exposed to the air. One of the most commonly used drugs in alleviation of symptoms of piles is the use of these anal hemorrhoid suppositories. These drugs are inserted into the anus at night and left to dissolve into the nearby pile tissues overnight.
These suppositories are made up of coca butter, low doses of drugs like hydrocortisone, phenylephrine HCL and sometimes starch. The steroid and phenylephrine components have anti-inflammatory and pain soothening properties. Some common examples of such suppositories are Anorol, Tucks and Preparation H.
However other hemorrhoid suppositories like Calmol do not have any active drug ingredient and they serve just as lubricants to ease bowel movements and eliminate straining during defecation.
To get the maximal benefit of the use of hemorrhoid suppositories, they have to be used in the proper way.
These are four important tips on how to use anal suppositories properly:
1-Insert the rounded end into the anus while holding it at the other flat end. This reduces friction at the anus and allows the suppositories to slide freely into the anus.
2-Lubricate the hemorrhoid suppositories with warm water before inserting it into the anus, this also aids easily sliding of the drugs into the anus.
3-You should insert the suppositories in a sitting, standing or lying down position. If you want to insert it while standing, put one leg on a chair before insertion. If you want to insert in a sitting position, you can sit on the toilet and spread your legs wide apart. To insert the drug while you are lying down you should lie down on one side of the body and you should flex your alternate leg up to your chest and then insert tab into the anus. All these positions will allow for proper entry of the drugs into the anus.
4-Suppositories are best inserted at night when you are about to sleep. The aim of the use of these drugs is to allow them to melt completely into fluid and liquid form which can be readily absorbed by the pile tissues. If you insert them during the day they can stain your pants, underwear and your clothes when they melt into liquid form.
You have to know however that suppositories are only good for prompt but brief symptomatic relief and they do not actually cure hemorrhoids.
