Are Pills Safe for Pregnant Women?
It has been an ongoing concern for most pregnant women whether or not to take medications especially if they are feeling unwell. Drugs have a certain effects on some fetus which may result to physical or mental defect. These effects are uncovered as the baby is born and during his growing years. But doctors still believe that it is still important for pregnant women to undergo medication, even if it is only a simple case of fever or colds. It might bring more harm to them and their baby if they decide to tolerate these minor ailments.
The US Bureau of Food and Administration released a set of drugs which are deemed safe or unsafe for preggies. However, pregnant patients still have to ask for medical advice from doctors whether they really need to or not.
Categories of Drugs for Pregnant Women (FDA):
- Category A- these drugs are recommended to pregnant women for use. These have undergone various tests and were proven safe. Amongst these are folic acid, vit B6, and thyroid medicine, which should be taken in moderation and under prescribed doses.
- Category B- these drugs are known to be used during pregnancy but did not cause any birth defects or problems to babies. This includes some antibiotics, Tylenol, artificial sweetener, Pepcid, prednisone or cortisone and insulin for diabetis. Ibuprofin such as Advil and Motrin isn’t advised be taken during the third quarter of pregnancy.
- Category C- these drugs have a strong possibility to harm both the unborn child and the mother. Most of the time, these drugs are taken only if its benefits overshadow the dangers. Before taking these drugs, it is advisable for pregnant women to have a lengthy discussion with their OBs about it. This includes prochlorperzaine, Sudafed, Diflucan, Cipro and some antidepressants.
- Category D- these drugs, without doubt, can cause harm on the fetus. This includes alcohol, lithium which is used for manic depression and Dilantin. Only in certain cases are chemotherapy drugs used during pregnancy.
- Category X- these drugs cause birth defects and so doctors never advise these to be taken during pregnancy. This includes drugs to like Accutane and Tegison or Soriatane, Thalidomide.
Headache and fever are common to pregnant women. Medications like Tylenol and Acetominophen and Anacin 3 are recommended. For cold and stuffy head, decongestants like Sudafed can be used. For stuffy/runny nose: Actifed, Teldrin, Benadryl and Chlortimetron can be used. Nasal sprays are not widely recommended. For cough, Robitussin DM can be used. Halls, Vicks and Lemon drops are also suggested. For sore throat: lozenges like Cepacol, Chloraseptic and warm salt water gargle are recommended. Although some pregnant women use herbal medicines, not all are safe for preggies.
