Can ear drops (antipyrine & benzocaine) be dropped on other wounds/infections for pain relief?
I have a nail that is infected from bitting the edge and its swelled. It hurts bad. I have some ear drops for pain I thought of dropping onto my nail bed.... Is it safe?

It won't hurt but it may not help much either. Antipyrine is an analgesic and benzocaine is an anesthetic agent. Neither is an antibiotic which is what you really need. But go ahead and see if the drops help with pain. Infections can be caused by nail biting and an infection along the border of a finger or toe nail is called paronychia. The swelling you see is cellulitis. Soak your finger in a solution that is 50% liquid antibacterial soap and 50% very warm water, 3-4 times a day, every day for 15 minutes at a time. Gently pat dry and apply an antibiotic ointment. A trip to the doctor would be a better idea and be certain to do this if the redness and/or swelling extends beyond the skin around your nail or to the pad of the finger. Keep your hands scrupulously clean and stop biting your nails. If it looks like an abscess is forming, see your doctor right away.
