Beano Enzyme
Beans, Beans, the Musical Fruit…
We all know the song and what it’s about, but the popular question I get asked every day is, “How do I avoid the ‘music?” Well, to avoid the ‘music’, one needs to start with why beans affect us this way to begin with. So I asked a bean expert and what I am told is that we get gas from beans for one simple reason. Beans contain complex sugars called oligosaccharides. We don’t have the necessary enzymes in our stomach to digest them, so the stomach passes them along to the intestines. That’s where they hang around gurgling and churning until they form gasses. Then there’s the problem of getting rid of the gasses, which leads me to the old saying, “There’s more room out than in.” (Which, along with “Pull my finger!” was my Dads favorite). Unfortunately, the aroma that comes with the ‘music’ isn’t any more flattering than the echoing sound that either leads to total embarrassment or a round of hearty praise (if you hang around with my brother and his friends).
Cure for the Curse
With this said, I decided to start digging a little deeper to find the prevention for the well known Curse of the Bean! It’s safe to say that, what works with one person may or may not work with another. The most popular remedy appears to be a three step procedure for dried beans.
Cover beans with water, soak overnight,
Drain and Rinse, Cover beans with water (a second time),
Boil, Drain, Rinse yet again
I’m told the soaking and boiling of the beans causes the oligosaccharides to seep into the water. And by discarding the water, so discards the gas causing devil. I was also told that in the overnight soak step, if one adds a quarter of a teaspoon of baking soda, then that will also help in the demise of gassiness. Do I believe this? Hmmmmmm, maybe not so much. In my house, this three step cure doesn’t seem to work so well. We still deal with the unpleasantness of flatulent. Does it lessen the roar? Not that we can tell, but it might work for you.
Miracles of Modern Medicine
Now many I talked to swears by Beano, a commercial nostrum available in grocery stores everywhere. I personally recommend Beano to anyone that asks because it works for me. Beano puts the necessary enzymes to digest the oligosaccharides into our systems. And as their commercial boasts; “With Beano, there will ‘Be No’ Gas!” I’m sure there are other possible remedies out there. One person mentioned an herb from Mexico called Mexican Tea that is an option. Another pointed out an active charcoal pill such as Flatulex (Interesting name for such a product). There are even some out there that suggest to ‘avoid eating beans’, but is my least favorite cure. Beans have so many benefits ranging from being protein rich to lowering the risk of cancer and heart problems. But that’s for another article.
In Closing
I find that no matter what the remedy, finding the right answer for everyone seems to be as easy as finding the answer to getting a boiled egg to peel easily. There is no proven answer. It’s mostly trial and error for everyone. So until you find your personal remedy, remember one thing: It’s a natural biological function; everyone does it, even your mom.
